Words of a Stranger

Divine entities govern life; Humans govern death.

Finished statistics homework!!! Yay!!

Now must start QF and mug for BGS test.

Watched DeathNote today. My opinion?

If you're looking for an arthouse film, forget it (I guess you know that).

If you're looking for an action packed sequence, forget it (guess you know that too).

If you're looking for a brainy popcorn fare, you have it (bet you didn't know that).

DeathNote is basically a mind game between two twisted geniuses, one who qualifies for any terrorist organisation (except that he already has the ultimate weapon governing death and life prior to it), and one who is amoral, treating the law like it was a set of game rules.

As the movie goes on, that's exactly what it turns out to be: a mind game that, oh, just so happens to involve massacres. Light, the guy with the DeathNote, starts off like I described above. By the second half of the movie, he's amoral too, treating the whole episode like a game, which both our leads want to win for no other reason except a childish dislike of losing.

As Ryuk (the god of Death and Light's brand new "imaginary" friend) later says, “你比死神更像死神。” ------- You're more like Death than Death is (or god of Death).

That said, Ryuk himself becomes very comical (quite dumb, actually) after his initial appearance. Watch out for the scene where he bangs his head on the ceiling in desperation for apples.

The actor that plays Light is a very good implicit(?) actor, or, to put it properly in chinese, is very good at 内心戏: Literally internal acting, as opposed to a lot of other actors that depend strongly on physical (more obvious) acting.

L's appearance is good. The Japanese authorities in the film didn't seem to think so.

The trailer for this movie was good. Stay to the end of the credits for the trailer to the next movie. It's not as good, but it's worth a little wait.

Audition in 3 days. Relax.
